The Gourmet Grocer Burger With Candied Maple Bacon



As Australia is going burger crazy and there are now gourmet joints popping up everywhere, I thought I would throw my hat in the ring with my Gourmet Grocer Burger special. Apart from amazing patties, my burgers include, candied maple bacon and only the best cheese, not the rubber stuff, I use Compte Gruyer and Shropshire Blue which both melt perfectly. This burger isn’t one for the faint hearted ,but its delicious! Enjoy ;0)

Makes 4

500g ground lean beef
1 large egg
1/2 cup minced onion
1/4 cup fine dried bread crumbs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 or 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
About 1/2 teaspoon salt
About 1/4 teaspoon pepper
streaky bacon rashers
2 tbs maple syrup
1 red onion sliced and pulled into rings
1 tomato sliced
100g Gruyer
100g Shropshire Blue Cheese
Your favourite hot sauce I used Crystal


1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, egg, onion, bread crumbs, Worcestershire, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper until well blended. Divide mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about 4 inches wide.

2. Lay burgers on an oiled barbecue grill, over a solid bed of hot coals, or high heat on a gas grill (you can hold your hand at grill level only 2 to 3 seconds); close lid on gas grill. Cook burgers, turning once, until browned on both sides and no longer pink inside (cut to test), 7 to 8 minutes total. Remove from grill.

Lay your bacon on a wire rack and drizzle with maple syrup bake in the oven for 10 mins at 180 degrees turn bacon over and bake for a further 5 mins

Slice buns in half and brown slightly on a griddle pan then layer with lettuce, burger, red onion rings, jalepenos, Bacon and cheese and place under a grill for a few minutes to melt the cheese. Then douse in your favourite hot sauce, ketchup or BBQ sauce
